The OODA Loop

Posted on 2021-10-23

The OODA loop (Observe, Orient, Decide, Act) is a clear, simple, and effective way to approach and assess any scenario, in general, or in a crisis. This four-step approach focuses on filtering available information, putting it in context and quickly making the most appropriate decision while also understanding that changes can be made as more data becomes available.

Observe

What is the status of your situation? Observe what is developing. What resources do you have, including people and their skills?

Orient

What threats and opportunities exist externally? What strengths and weaknesses do you have internally? Adjust what you need to relative to your environment. Orient in order to get strategic footing.

Decide

Given all of what you know, decide on the optimal outcome. With the resources and skills you have, decide on the best plan of action in order to achieve optimal outcome.

Act

Execute on what you’ve decided, focused on the desired outcome. Let results of your actions feed continously back into the ongoing OODA Loop. Act on what you’ve decided and adjust as needed.
