Ordinary Wisdom
[Paul] To those that have been wondering about the world of “improved” CB radios: Â Â Over the past years, an industry has blown up whereby “10 Meter” amateur radio’s are being sold with what amounts to a “MARS” mod to open them up to TX on the 11 Meter (CB) band at 27mhz. Â Generally, the “average” CB radio you buy at a Truck Stop puts out 4 watts RMS and 12-14w PEP (this is Generally AM modulation, but some more advanced radios also have both upper and lower sideband, just like our normal Amateur Radios). Â The appeal of these improved “10 meter” radios, is that they generate more power output, and are generally optimized for AM. Â There are a handful of vendors that sell these “10 Meter” radios “tuned up and ‘ready to go'” which is code for making the able to transmit on 11 Meters, or CB channels. Â Â These vendors buy the radios as genuine “10 Meter” amateur radios…but thats all a big game….everyone in the food chain knows and understands that the vendor will lift the lid on that radio, make the appropriate “mod” to open up the radio to 11 Meters, and then sell that radio to the public. Â Â I am familiar with one such of these vendors who calls himself “Rooster CB” and he’s located in Tennessee somewhere. Â Â I ran across a youtube video that he published for someone I know very very well who recently bought one of Rooster’s modified CB radios, and in the short video he demonstrates the power output of the modified radio. Â If you don’t have a CB radio and are thinking about having an improved model, I believe this guy Rooster is reputable as this friend I know very very well has had a good experience with him…but there are probably a dozen other such CB radio salesman. Â Here’s a link to that short video:
