Ordinary Wisdom

[Talitha]

Summary: if your canned good passes three phases then it can be kept almost indefinitely. [Up front disclaimer:  I don’t take any responsibility for your canned goods.]

  • Level 1: before you open it- check for holes, is it swollen, rusted, seams damaged, dents anywhere, and is it partially empty. Throw it out.
  • Level 2- When you are opening it, if it makes bubbling, hissing noise, stuff sputtering, or spewing juice and stuff out throw it out.
  • Level 3-After opening it if it looks bad, badly discolored or has a bad odor throw it out.

The cans with tomatoes or rust are the cans that fail most often.

Granted he dealt with only metal cans.

Keep storage area consistently cool, dry and clean.

Make certain you always listen for the sound of a good seal when you open a can. If it is different at all, toss that can asap.
