Ordinary Wisdom

[Marie] I made my essential oil, talc free body powder today.

DIY “Talc Free” Essential oil , Chamomile & Lavender Powder.

I started making my own powder about 6 years ago after learning the benefits and joy of making my own products… I like knowing exactly what ingredients are being used.

Talc-based products as you may have heard,  were  part of lawsuits filed by thousands of women who claimed talcum powder caused their ovarian cancer

So I set out to make my own healthy alternative… Making powder was one of the easiest projects I’ve ever done .. and fun too! I used organic arrowroot powder (you can substitute cornstarch, but make sure it’s non-GMO) which is a white silky powder extracted from the root of the arrowroot plant. Then I added Bob’s Red Mill aluminum free baking soda that is made by a simple water process using no chemicals. Baking soda can make the powder somewhat coarse.. so play with the recipe if you like,  until you get the consistency/ texture you prefer. You can substitute baking powder for the baking soda if you prefer. My 3rd ingredient is White Kaolin Clay which makes a great base for body powder and is naturally absorbent. It’s the mildest of all clays and is great for people with sensitive skin. Then I added organic crushed flowers.. lavender and chamomile… ahh smells heavenly. Next I added Aloe Vera Powder for its historical healing skin properties. Did you know that an Egyptian text from 1550 BC describes Aloe Vera’s internal & external medicinal purposes.. and it was first mentioned in the English language in 1655?! By 1830, the US Pharmacopeia suggested that aloe be used to protect the skin and today Aloe has gained prominence as a superfood & healing tonic.  Next I added a lavender essential oil. but you can choose whichever essential oil you prefer… Lavender is known for its skin loving properties and is so soothing & calming.

Essential Oil Body Powder:

1 Cup Arrowroot
1/3 Cup Baking Soda
1/4 Cup White Kaolin Clay
1/4 Cup Aloe powder
4 TBSP Finely Ground Herbs/Flowers
– (3 Tbsp Lavender)
– (1 Tbsp Chamomile)
10 Drops Lavender Essential Oil

Makes approximately 22 ounces . Enjoy!
