America: Lost in Place

Posted on 2023-02-08

How much has America changed over the last 70+ years? Dr. Joe Brickner (CORAC’s Region 10 Coordinator) looks back on how life existed in the United States back when he was growing up in the 1950’s and 1960’s, then compares it to life today in America. He analyzes seventeen different topics, ranging from transportation to shopping to faith and freedom. At the end of each topic, he provides his “takeaways” as to life being better or worse today versus the golden years following World War II. At the end of the book, Dr. Brickner summarizes his findings and provides a conclusion to his analysis. He then lays out his recommendations and a game plan for America and Americans to successfully seek out a new set of golden years.

Dr. Joe Brickner grew up in Ohio but attended college in Kansas where he was a basketball student-athlete. He has always loved the game of basketball, but to put bread on the table, he pursued a business career. Nearly 30 years into that career, he got an opportunity to pursue his dream and become a men’s head college basketball coach. His book, “So, you want to be a Coach…” is his story, told with the endearing anecdotes that life presents – some will make you laugh, and some will make you cry.

Dr. Brickner not only coached but also taught at the undergraduate and graduate levels. He is now retired living with his beloved bride of over 35 years, Connie. He has two sons, Alex and Scott, who each have three children of their own. He still works out every day and competes in age-division basketball tournaments around the country. He recently earned his purple belt in Chinese Kenpo, is a beekeeper and completed writing his second book titled “America: Lost in Place (Musings at 70+).” He also hosts a weekly podcast called “Building with Brick – Foundational Wisdom on Coaching, Careers, and Christ.” The podcast interviews athletic role models and explores just how they became successful.
