Ordinary Wisdom

[Talitha] Simple introduction for the uses and benefits of Castor Oil Packs: Watch now >

This is the best ‘scientific’ video with scientific details I have seen regarding using castor oil packs. This does not just cover the topic of eyes, but many other health needs too. Watch now >

For detox and stress relief purposes you will get the best results by using it all night. Since your gallbladder/spleen/liver all peak to do their work in the wee hours of the morning while you are sleeping that is when you want to be wearing the pack to support them. Be sure to select a castor oil pack that looks like it will be comfortable to sleep with.

You get half the results putting the oil on your skin, no pack. If you use a pack, you get better results. They are still researching why that is.

For a normal castor oil detox, you would place the oil/pack over your liver and sleep with it all night. If you are in pain in a particular spot, say an injured rib or sore hip joint, place the castor oil pack over that spot for an hour or two for pain relief (it reduces inflammation). You can also add a couple drops of an essential oil like Frankincense, Lavender or Helichrysum. External heat applied to these pain point packs seemed to help further reduce the pain. No external heat is needed when doing the pack overnight.

It is not safe to ingest castor oil while pregnant, unless you want to induce contractions by irritating your lower GI tract. But topically, it is safe. Everything I have read online that says it is not safe but only refers to the fact that it can start contractions when ingested. My midwife (50 years of experience) said I could do castor oil packs while pregnant…I am not doing it all night or for long periods of times. I have been doing it in tactical locations (where there is pain) not trying to do a big liver detox/putting the pack on my belly. It is also still safe to use for oil pulling, on your face, hands, feet, etc.

Castor oil is great as an overnight moisturizer, for oil pulling, massage or any dry/irritated skin.

Things to consider when buying:

  • Castor oil should only be bought is glass jars, hexane free, cold pressed.
  • Packs should be organic cotton. Bamboo which is often touted as being green/organic needs many chemicals to break down the fibers to make it into material, so best to avoid.
