From snapshots on our smartphones to dusty photo boxes tucked away in closets, these images are more than just pictures – they are important visual threads that weave our family stories of heritage, traditions, events, faith, and the values we hold dear together.
For the past decade, I’ve been gifting custom photo albums to loved ones in place of the typical stuff (quickly consumed and forgotten) on birthdays and at Christmas time. What started as a bit of tidying up around the house, became a heartfelt opportunity to strengthen family bonds and ensure that the family’s legacy was preserved for future generations.
Digging through old boxes and sifting through long forgotten albums can be a heartwarming journey that brings family members closer. Whether you’re crafting an album for a parent, sibling, child, grandchild or a friend, organizing decades of memories into manageable volumes offers a great chance to connect with all on a deeper level because:
- Every photograph tells a story. As you revisit these memories, you may uncover shared experiences, family traditions, or even forgotten moments that spark laughter and meaningful conversation.
- It bridges generations. For younger family members, learning about the past through photographs can provide a sense of identity and belonging. They get to see the lives of their ancestors, understand the roots of family traditions, and appreciate the values that have been passed down through the years.
- It causes us to reflect. As someone looks through old photos, they might find themselves reflecting on the passage of time and the changes that have occurred within the family. This process can be both therapeutic and enlightening, allowing people to see how the family has grown and evolved over the years. It’s a chance to celebrate the milestones and acknowledge the challenges, fostering a sense of gratitude for the journey your family has been on.
- It’s an opportunity to let go. At the same time, organizing photos can help you let go of the past and focus on the present. By deciding which photos to keep and which to let go, you’re not only decluttering your space but also making room for new memories.
It can seem like a daunting task, but crafting DIY photo albums is fun an easy to do.

If you already have boxes of photos to work with, it can be as simple as sorting your images chronologically and/or around events and themes, then adding them to photo albums. You can find a nice variety of options at any major big box store such Walmart, Target, Michael’s, Hobby Lobby, etc.
It’s also helpful to jot down the names of the people pictured on the back, including date of the photo, plus any other helpful notes that provide a larger frame of reference (e.g. – Lois, Sally and Barney Smith, Summer ‘65, Willow Lake fishing getaway for Billy’s birthday).
If you’re using larger format photo albums, you can treat each page as a scrapbook layout, mounting your smaller photos, then adding other writing and mementos to personalize it further. Get creative!
I prefer large format albums that allow for a nice combination of 8×10 and 5×7 prints. Sometimes I’ll add a facing page with a quote, short story, or maybe just a simple adjective to describe how I see that person such as “clever,” “enduring,” “adventurous,” etc.
If you’re going all in with DIY, plan on using a decent photo editing application such as Adobe Photoshop, and a combination photo quality ink jet printer/scanner to produce your custom photos. I recommend starting with the lower end Canon and Epson scanner/printers that are relatively inexpensive and do a marvelous job with photo prints (but beware the ink cartridges can add up after a while).
If you lack those tools, there should be some great alternatives near you such as the in-store photo kiosks at Walgreens, Walmart, and CVS Pharmacy. Or you can simply visit their websites to use their automated tools from the comfort of your own home.
Many other companies, such as Shutterfly and Snapfish, also offer online photo printing services where you can edit photos before placing your order.
Your custom photo albums will give new life to the stories that matter the most to your loved ones. And during hard times, these gifts can prove to be an incredible asset, giving just the needed boost at just the right time. Ultimately, they can serve as time capsules that may be worth more to your future relatives than you can possibly imagine.
