The Resilience Rebound

Posted on 2026-04-24

You’ve Built the Foundation—Now Let’s Make It Real

If you followed the first seven episodes, hopefully you now have a better understanding of the power of a growth mindset. You’ve learned focus, discipline, perseverance, adaptability, emotional intelligence. You’ve found your purpose and shifted your perspective.

But then reality hits: You fail. You doubt. You realize knowing something and living it are worlds apart.

Welcome to the next chapter in Lectio Vitae, the mindset series.

This isn’t a reboot—it’s a level up. The first seven talks gave you the blueprint. These next seven show you how to actually build with it.

This is where inspiration becomes transformation. Where thinking differently becomes doing differently.

Let’s go.

LISTEN TO THE EPISODE 8

The Resilience Rebound

The Bounce Test

You know what separates a rubber ball from a rock? Drop them both from the same height. The rock? It just sits there, looking dignified and broken. The ball? It bounces back.

Same impact, completely different response.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth: Life is going to drop you. Hard. Multiple times. The question isn’t if you’ll hit the ground—it’s whether you’ll bounce when you hit the ground.

And that’s what we’re talking about today: resilience. Not just perseverance (which is about staying in the race), but the ability to get knocked down and actually get back up. To turn failure from a full stop into a comma.
Understanding Resilience

Understanding Resilience

Resilience isn’t about not feeling pain. It’s not about being tough or emotionally numb. That’s a misconception that keeps people stuck.

Real resilience is the capacity to experience difficulty, feel the weight of it, and then choose to move forward anyway.

It’s the difference between:

Denial: “This isn’t happening” (spoiler: it is)
Despair: “This will always be this way” (spoiler: it won’t)
Resilience: “This is hard right now, and I’m going to figure out what comes next”

The Three Pillars of Resilience

How many of you have heard the advice: ‘Just stay positive’ or ‘Don’t worry, everything happens for a reason’? And how many of you wanted to throw that advice out the window? Today, I want to talk about something different. Not toxic positivity. Not pretending. I want to talk about real resilience—the kind that actually works. And it’s built on three pillars. Without all three, you’re just pretending.

1. Acknowledgment – You have to feel it to heal it

2. Perspective – Seeing the setback as temporary, not permanent

3. Action – Doing something, anything, to move forward

Without all three, you’re just pretending.

Saints Who Bounced Back

Resilience isn’t a modern concept. It’s not something we invented in therapy or self-help books. The saints knew this. They lived it. And their stories aren’t just inspiring—they’re a masterclass in how to actually bounce back. Let me show you what I mean.

St. Augustine of Hippo: From Chaos to Clarity

Let’s start with Augustine. This guy lived a life that would make most of us uncomfortable just hearing about it. He had a mistress for years. He was obsessed with pleasure, power, and philosophy that led him nowhere. He was ambitious, lustful, and basically running from God while pretending he was searching for truth.

He wasn’t just lost. He was enthusiastically lost.

But then something shifted. Through the prayers of his mother Monica (who never stopped believing in him), through encounters with Christian teachers, and through his own intellectual honesty, Augustine had a bit of a breakdown. Or maybe it was a breakthrough.

He literally heard a child’s voice saying, “Take and read. Take and read.” He opened Scripture randomly and read Paul’s words about putting off the works of darkness. And something broke open in him.

Augustine didn’t just convert. He transformed completely. He became a bishop, one of the greatest theologians in Church history, and wrote Confessions—arguably the first autobiography ever written—where he openly admits his failures and traces how God worked through them.

The lesson: Your past doesn’t disqualify you. It equips you. Augustine’s years of searching, failing, and struggling gave him the credibility and wisdom to guide others through their own spiritual journeys. His greatest strength came from his deepest failures.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” (2 Corinthians 5:17). Augustine lived this verse. He didn’t deny his past—he transformed it.

St. Ignatius of Loyola: From Soldier to Servant

Ignatius was a soldier. A really good soldier. He was ambitious, proud, and dedicated to military glory. That was his entire identity—the warrior, the defender, the guy who won battles.

Then a cannonball shattered his leg during battle.

Talk about hitting rock bottom. For Ignatius, losing the ability to be a soldier was like losing his entire self. During his long recovery, he had nothing to do but read and think. He read spiritual books and became fascinated by the lives of saints.

But here’s the crucial part: He didn’t just read passively. He noticed something. When he read about military glory, he felt a temporary thrill followed by emptiness. When he read about saints serving God, he felt a deep, lasting peace.

Ignatius was resilient enough to change his mind about what mattered.

He went from being obsessed with personal glory to founding the Jesuits, one of the most influential religious orders in history. He created the “Spiritual Exercises”—a systematic way of discernment that’s still used today by people of all faiths.

The guy who was knocked down by a cannonball ended up launching a spiritual revolution.

The lesson: Resilience sometimes means completely changing direction. It’s not always about getting back to what you were doing. It’s about discovering who you’re actually meant to become.

“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me” (Galatians 2:20). Ignatius died to his old identity so a new one could emerge.

Saint Moses the Black: From Destruction to Redemption

Moses the Black’s story is the most dramatic bounce-back you’ll ever hear.

He started as a slave in Egypt. But he wasn’t a passive victim—he became a notorious criminal. He led a gang of robbers. He murdered. He terrorized. He was dangerous. The kind of person society writes off as irredeemable.

Then one day, while fleeing from authorities, he sought refuge in a monastery. And something happened that changed everything. The monks didn’t reject him. They welcomed him. They saw something in him that he couldn’t see in himself.

Moses didn’t just reform. He radically transformed. He became a monk himself, spent years in the desert in prayer and penance, and eventually became a spiritual father to hundreds of people seeking wisdom.

But—and this is important—he didn’t pretend his past didn’t exist. When temptations would come, he would acknowledge them directly. He once told his disciples, “If you saw me running to the water and drowning myself, would you pull me out?” When they said yes, he replied, “That’s what you must do for your brothers when they’re struggling.” He used his knowledge of darkness to help others find light.

Moses was murdered by barbarians while protecting his monastery. His last act was one of service.

The lesson: No matter how far you’ve fallen, no matter what you’ve done, redemption is possible. And your darkest past can become your greatest gift to others. Moses didn’t erase his criminal history—he transformed it into compassion.

“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). Moses experienced this love directly. He was accepted while still broken, and that acceptance healed him.

Saint Mark Ji Tianxiang: Resilience Under Persecution

Mark Ji Tianxiang was a Chinese priest in the 20th century during one of the most brutal periods of persecution. He wasn’t facing abstract spiritual challenges—he was facing torture, imprisonment, and death.

During the Cultural Revolution, Mark was arrested and tortured. The authorities tried to break him, to make him renounce his faith, to turn him into a tool for their propaganda.

He refused. Not with defiance or anger, but with quiet, unshakeable conviction.

What’s remarkable about Mark isn’t just that he endured. It’s that he continued to minister even in prison. He heard confessions. He celebrated Mass in secret. He comforted other prisoners. He didn’t just survive—he served.

Mark was eventually released, and he continued his priesthood until his death. He never became bitter. He never gave up. He never let his persecutors define him.

The lesson: Resilience isn’t just about bouncing back from personal failure. It’s about maintaining your integrity and purpose even when external forces try to destroy you. Mark’s bounce-back wasn’t about recovering from a mistake—it was about refusing to be broken by circumstances beyond his control.

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance” (James 1:2-3).

Mark didn’t just endure persecution—he found meaning in it. He transformed suffering into spiritual strength.

The Mechanics of Bouncing Back

Now take a look at the mechanics of bouncing back.

Step 1: Feel it to heal it

When you fall, your first instinct is often to jump up immediately and pretend nothing happened. We’ve all done it—physically and emotionally.

Resist that urge.

Take a moment. Assess the damage. Does something hurt? Is something broken? You can’t fix what you don’t acknowledge.

The Psalms are full of people sitting in their pain:

“Why, O Lord, do you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?” (Psalm 10:1)

David didn’t skip over the hard feelings. He named them. He questioned. He grieved.

And then—only then—did he move forward.

Your action: When you face a setback, give yourself permission to feel it. One day. One week. Whatever you need. But set a limit. Don’t set up permanent residence in disappointment.

Step 2: Reframe the Narrative

Here’s where perspective comes in. The same event can be a tragedy or a teaching moment, depending on the story you tell about it.

Failed a test? You’re either “not smart enough” or “now you know what to study differently next time.”

Got rejected? You’re either “not worthy” or “one step closer to finding someone who values you.”

Lost a job? You’re either “a failure” or “freed up to find something better aligned with your skills.”

Same event. Different story. Different outcome.

Augustine understood this. After years of living a life he was ashamed of, he didn’t say, “I’m irredeemable.” He said, “This was my journey, and it led me here.” He reframed his past as part of his spiritual education.

Moses the Black did the same. Instead of seeing his criminal past as proof of his worthlessness, he saw it as evidence of God’s transformative power.

“Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all” (2 Corinthians 4:16-17).

Notice the reframe: troubles are “momentary” and “light” compared to what’s being built. Not denying the trouble, but repositioning it.

Your action: Write down your setback. Now write three different stories about what it means. Which one moves you forward?

Step 3: Take the Smallest Possible Next Right Step

This is where resilience gets practical.

When Augustine heard that voice saying “Take and read,” his first step wasn’t to write Confessions or become a bishop. It was to pick up the Scripture and read one passage.

When Ignatius was recovering from his shattered leg, his first step wasn’t to found the Jesuits. It was to read a book about saints.

When Moses entered the monastery, his first step wasn’t to become a spiritual father to hundreds. It was to show up and say, “I want to change.”

When Mark was imprisoned, his first step wasn’t to transform the entire prison system. It was to pray. To hear one confession. To comfort one fellow prisoner.

Resilience isn’t about the grand comeback. It’s about the next small choice.

When you’re devastated, your brain is flooded with cortisol and adrenaline. You can’t think strategically. You can barely think at all. So don’t. Just pick one small thing:

    • Make one phone call
    • Send one email
    • Go for one walk
    • Have one conversation
    • Read one chapter

That’s it. The momentum builds from there.

“By the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. Rather, I worked harder than all of them—not I, however, but the grace of God that is with me” (1 Corinthians 15:10).

Notice: grace + work. God’s part + your part. You don’t bounce back by willpower alone, and you don’t bounce back by waiting for divine intervention alone. You do it together.

Your action: Right now, identify one small step. Not a giant leap. One small step toward moving forward from whatever knocked you down.

The Resilience Paradox

Here’s something counterintuitive: The people who bounce back best are often the ones who’ve been knocked down the most.

Why? Because they know something the rest of us are still learning—that falling isn’t fatal. That the ground doesn’t swallow you. That you can hit bottom and still get back up.

It’s like a muscle. Every time you exercise resilience, you get stronger. Every time you bounce back, the next bounce is slightly easier.

Augustine knew this. His years of failure taught him how to help others through theirs.

Ignatius knew this. His shattered leg taught him how to help others navigate their own broken dreams.

Moses knew this. His criminal past taught him how to meet people in their darkness without judgment.

Mark knew this. His persecution taught him how to find meaning in suffering.

This doesn’t mean you should go looking for suffering (please don’t). But it does mean that your past failures are actually your greatest asset. They’re proof that you can survive hard things.

The Psalmist knew this:

“I have been through much trouble and sorrow, but you, O Lord, will keep me alive. You will bring me back from the depths of the earth” (Psalm 71:20).

Notice the progression: trouble → sorrow → survival → revival. It’s not a straight line up. It’s a journey through the valley that leads to higher ground.

What Resilience Is NOT

Let me be clear about what we’re not talking about:

Resilience is NOT:

    • Toxic positivity (“Just think positive!” while ignoring real problems)
    • Pretending you’re fine when you’re not
    • Never asking for help
    • Grinding yourself into dust
    • Accepting abuse or injustice
    • Moving so fast you never process what happened

Resilience IS:

    • Honest about the pain
    • Strategic about the response
    • Willing to ask for support
    • Sustainable over the long haul
    • Knowing when to fight and when to let go
    • Taking time to learn before moving forward

There’s a reason the Psalms include both lament and celebration. Both are necessary.

Building Your Resilience Infrastructure

Resilience isn’t something you develop in the moment of crisis. It’s something you build in advance.

1. Cultivate a Support System

Augustine had Monica, his mother, who never stopped praying for him. Ignatius had the monks who welcomed him into their community. Moses had spiritual elders who guided his transformation. Mark had fellow prisoners and, eventually, a faith community that sustained him.

None of them bounced back alone.

“Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed” (James 5:16).

You need people who know you, who care about you, and who will tell you the truth. Not people who’ll let you wallow, but people who’ll sit with you in the wallowing and then help you up.

Action: Identify three people you can be honest with about struggle. If you don’t have them, start building those relationships now.

2. Develop a Spiritual Practice

For the saints we discussed, faith wasn’t a backup plan for emergencies. It was the foundation of daily life.

Prayer, Scripture reading, sacraments, meditation—whatever your practice—these aren’t luxuries. They’re resilience training.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).

When crisis hits, you don’t have time to figure out your spiritual life. You need it already in place.

Action: If you don’t have a daily spiritual practice, start small. Five minutes. That’s it. Build from there.

3. Learn From Previous Bounces

Every time you’ve recovered from something—a breakup, a job loss, a mistake, a disappointment—you’ve proven you can bounce back.

Write those down. Remember them. When you’re in the next valley, you can remind yourself: “I’ve survived hard things before. I’ll survive this too.”

“I remember all you have done, O Lord; I remember your wonderful deeds of long ago” (Psalm 77:11).

Here’s some good advice from David: Remember. Specifically, remember the times God came through. Remember the times you came through.

Action: Write down three times you bounced back from something difficult. What did you learn? What strengths did you discover?

The Big Picture

Here’s what I want you to understand: Resilience isn’t just about recovering from setbacks. It’s about participating in the fundamental pattern of Christian faith.

Death and resurrection. Failure and redemption. Suffering and transformation.

This isn’t unique to Christianity—many wisdom traditions teach this. But it’s central to Christian faith.

Every time you bounce back from failure, you’re enacting the resurrection. You’re saying, “This isn’t the end. There’s new life possible.”

That’s not just psychology. That’s theology.

“Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and all those who live by believing in me will never die'” (John 11:25-26).

This isn’t just about eternal life. It’s about the pattern of life itself. Death → resurrection. Failure → redemption. Darkness → light.

When you develop resilience, you’re not just becoming more effective. You’re becoming more aligned with the deepest truth of existence.

Augustine learned this. From chaos to clarity.

Ignatius learned this. From soldier to servant.

Moses learned this. From destruction to redemption.

Mark learned this. From persecution to perseverance.

They all discovered that their lowest moments were actually invitations to transformation.

Your Bounce-Back Challenge

I’m going to leave you with this:

You’re going to get knocked down. Maybe you already have been. Maybe you’re in the middle of it right now.

When that happens, remember:

Feel it. Don’t skip the pain.
Reframe it. This is a comma, not a period.
Take one small next right step. Not a leap. One step.
Remember your people. You don’t do this alone.
Trust the pattern. Death and resurrection. Failure and redemption. It’s worked before. It’ll work again.

Augustine went from pursuing pleasure to pursuing God.

Ignatius went from seeking military glory to seeking spiritual transformation.

Moses went from being society’s reject to being a spiritual father.

Mark went from being tortured to maintaining his dignity and faith.

They all got knocked down. They all got back up.

So will you.

“For though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again” (Proverbs 24:16).

Not if they fall. When they fall. Because falling is part of being human.

But rising? That’s a choice. And it’s always available to you.

Final Takeaways

Resilience is the bridge between perseverance and purpose. Perseverance keeps you moving toward your goal. Resilience is what happens when the path gets harder than you expected.

And it always does.

But you already know how to bounce. You just need to remember.

ACTION ITEMS

5 Things You Can Start Doing Now

1. Identify Your Support System (This Week). Write down three people you can be completely honest with about struggle—people who won’t let you wallow but will sit with you in it. If you don’t have three, start building those relationships now. Text one of them this week and deepen the connection.

2. Start a Daily Spiritual Practice (Tomorrow). Commit to five minutes of prayer, Scripture reading, meditation, or reflection. Not when crisis hits—now, while things are stable. This is your resilience foundation. Five minutes. That’s it. Build from there.

3. Document Your Past Bounces (This Week). Write down three times you’ve recovered from something difficult—a breakup, job loss, mistake, disappointment. For each one, write what you learned and what strength you discovered. Keep this list. When you’re in the next valley, you’ll remember: “I’ve survived hard things before.”

4. Reframe Your Current Setback (Today). If you’re facing a setback right now, write it down. Then write three different stories about what it means. Which one moves you forward? Choose that story and live into it.

5. Identify Your One Small Next Right Step (Today). Don’t plan the grand comeback. Pick one small action: one phone call, one email, one walk, one conversation, one chapter. Take it this week. Momentum builds from there.
