The Bias Blindness

When Deception Feels Like Truth

You think you see clearly. You’re probably wrong—and you have no idea.

Your brain doesn’t perceive reality. It constructs it based on what it expects to find. Which means whoever controls your expectations controls your reality. And that’s exactly how deception works.

In this talk, we’re going beyond “how your brain tricks you” to explore something far more dangerous: how you mistake falsehood for truth without even knowing it. We’ll uncover the four levels of bias that trap us—from innocent misperception to institutional deception—and discover why Jesus spent His entire ministry fighting against this exact problem.

But here’s the real question: If your own brain is deceiving you, how do you ever escape? The answer might surprise you.

The Bias Blindness

Introduction: Cognitive Biases as Spiritual Deception

Here’s what we haven’t covered yet in this series: Your biases aren’t just thinking problems. They’re deception problems.

And deception—being fooled, being blind, mistaking falsehood for truth—is the oldest spiritual trick in the book.

Remember the Garden? The serpent didn’t say, “God is evil.” The serpent said, “Did God really say…?” The serpent introduced doubt. The serpent created a bias—a systematic error in how Adam and Eve perceived reality. They looked at the fruit and saw opportunity instead of danger. They looked at God’s command and saw restriction instead of protection.

That’s a cognitive bias in action. And it cost them everything.

So today, we’re going to talk about something different than just “how your brain tricks you.” We’re going to talk about how deception operates—how you mistake falsehood for truth, how you become convinced of things that aren’t real, and how Jesus spent His entire ministry fighting against this exact problem.

The Core Issue: You’re Not Seeing What’s Actually There

Your brain doesn’t see reality. Your brain constructs reality based on what it expects to see.

Yeah, this is neuroscience, but it’s also theology. Because if your brain is constructing reality instead of perceiving it, then whoever controls your expectations controls your reality. And that’s exactly what deception does.

Consider this: Confirmation bias isn’t just about preferring information that agrees with you. It’s about literally not seeing information that contradicts you. Your brain filters it out before it even reaches your conscious awareness.

This means you can be looking directly at evidence that contradicts your belief, and your brain will simply… not register it. You’ll look right through it. You’ll reinterpret it. You’ll forget it almost immediately.

That’s not stupidity. That’s neurology. But spiritually? That’s exactly how deception works.

Jesus said: “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?” (Matthew 7:3)

He also said this: “Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand.” (Matthew 13:13)

Jesus is describing exactly what neuroscience is now confirming: People can have information right in front of them and still not perceive it. Not because they’re necessarily bad. But because they’re biased. Their expectations are filtering reality.

The Deception Hierarchy: How Bias Becomes Spiritual Blindness

Let’s map this out, because understanding the progression matters:

Level 1: Simple Bias (Innocent Misperception)

You see what you expect to see. You remember what fits your narrative. You notice information that confirms what you already believe.

Example: You believe your neighbor doesn’t like you, so you interpret their neutral comment as criticism. You interpret their silence as disapproval. You interpret their busy schedule as evidence they’re avoiding you.

None of this is intentional. Your brain is just doing what brains do—making predictions based on past patterns and expecting to see those patterns again.

Level 2: Motivated Bias (Self-Protective Misperception)

Now you’re not just seeing what you expect. You’re motivated to see it because seeing something else would threaten your identity or your comfort.

Example: You believe you’re a good person, so when you do something unkind, you immediately reinterpret it. “I wasn’t being cruel, I was being honest.” “I wasn’t being selfish, I was being practical.” “I wasn’t being manipulative, I was being persuasive.”

Your brain is actively protecting your self-image by reinterpreting your own actions.

This is where it gets spiritually dangerous. Because now you’re not just misperceiving—you’re defending the misperception. You’re invested in staying blind.

Level 3: Collective Bias (Tribal Deception)

Now you’re not alone in your bias. You’re surrounded by people who share it. You reinforce each other’s misperceptions. You create an echo chamber where falsehood becomes “truth” simply because everyone around you believes it.

Example: A group becomes convinced that another group is dangerous. They share stories that confirm this. They interpret ambiguous actions as threatening. They ignore evidence to the contrary. Within the group, the bias becomes “common sense.” Outside the group, it looks like propaganda.

But here’s what’s insidious: Inside the group, it feels like truth. It feels like you’re the one who sees clearly and everyone else is blind.

Jesus encountered this constantly. The Pharisees were convinced they were right. They had Scripture on their side. They had tradition. They had community agreement. And they were certain they could see clearly.

But Jesus said: “You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” (John 8:44)

Jesus was describing something profound: The father of lies doesn’t just tell lies. He distorts perception so completely that people believe they’re seeing truth when they’re actually seeing deception.

Level 4: Institutional Bias (Systemic Deception)

Now the bias is baked into the system itself. The institutions, the power structures, the incentives—they all reinforce the misperception.

Example: A corporation becomes convinced that its product is harmless, even though evidence suggests otherwise. But the financial incentives are so strong, the organizational structures so aligned with this belief, that contradictory evidence gets suppressed. People who try to speak truth get silenced. The institution protects itself by protecting the lie.

This is what happens in any system where power is invested in maintaining a particular narrative—whether it’s a corporation, a government, a church, or a culture.

And here’s the terrifying part: The people within the system often genuinely believe they’re right. They’re not evil. They’re just trapped in a bias so large and so institutionalized that they can’t see outside it.

Where Cognitive Biases Come From (And Why They’re So Powerful)

Your biases exist for a reason. They’re not bugs. They’re features.

Your brain evolved to make quick decisions with incomplete information. In a survival situation, that’s useful. If you see movement in the tall grass, your brain doesn’t wait for complete data. It assumes a predator and tells you to run. That bias—that tendency to interpret ambiguous threats as real threats—kept your ancestors alive.

But in the modern world, where most threats aren’t physical, that same bias becomes a liability. You interpret social rejection as existential danger. You interpret disagreement as attack. You interpret change as threat.

And here’s where it gets spiritual: Satan knows how your brain works.

The serpent in the Garden didn’t try to convince Eve that God was a liar. The serpent introduced doubt: “Did God really say…?” The serpent created a bias—a reason to question God’s word. And that bias was enough.

Satan doesn’t need you to consciously reject God. Satan just needs you to be biased enough that you misinterpret God’s intentions. Satan needs you to see restriction where there’s protection. Satan needs you to see danger where there’s love.

This is why Jesus spent so much time fighting against misperception. It’s not because people were stupid. It’s because they were biased—and their biases were being exploited by forces that wanted them blind.

Where Cognitive Biases Come From (And Why They’re So Powerful)

Deception #1: God Doesn’t Love You (Or He’s Not Trustworthy)

This is the original lie. Satan convinced Eve that God was holding out on her. That God’s rules were about control, not care. That God couldn’t be trusted.

How does this deception work? Through confirmation bias. If you believe God doesn’t love you, your brain will find evidence everywhere. Every hardship becomes proof. Every delay becomes evidence. Every unanswered prayer becomes confirmation.

Meanwhile, the actual evidence of God’s love—the grace, the provision, the answered prayers, the miracles—gets filtered out or reinterpreted. “That was just luck.” “That was coincidence.” “That was my own effort.”

Jesus fought this deception constantly. He said: “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the knowledge of your Father… So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” (Matthew 10:29-31)

Jesus was directly addressing the bias: You believe God doesn’t care about you. But look at the evidence. God cares about sparrows. God knows about them. God is present to them. And you are worth infinitely more than sparrows.

But here’s the thing: Even after Jesus said this, people still doubted. Because the bias was so strong, so deeply embedded in their nervous systems, that even direct evidence from Jesus Himself wasn’t enough to overcome it.

This is why faith is hard. It’s not because God’s love isn’t evident. It’s because your brain is biased against seeing it. Your brain has been trained by past hurt to expect abandonment. Your brain has been trained by loss to expect pain. Your brain is looking for evidence that God doesn’t love you—and it will find it, even if it has to distort reality to do so.

Deception #2: You’re More Righteous Than You Are (Or More Wicked)

This is the self-serving bias on steroids. You either believe you’re better than you are (which leads to pride and judgment) or you believe you’re worse than you are (which leads to shame and despair).

The Pharisees had the first version. They genuinely believed they were righteous. They kept the law meticulously. They fasted. They prayed. They gave to the poor. And they used all of this as evidence that they were good.

But Jesus said: “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean.” (Matthew 23:27)

Jesus was saying: Your bias is so strong that you’ve completely misperceived yourself. You think you’re righteous, but you’re actually full of corruption. You’ve deceived yourself so thoroughly that you can’t even see it.

How did this happen? Through selective attention and motivated reasoning. The Pharisees focused on external actions (the things they could control and measure) and ignored internal motivations (the things that revealed their true character). They reasoned that as long as they followed the rules, they were good.

But Jesus said the real problem was internal: “Out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.” (Matthew 15:19)

The Pharisees were biased toward seeing their external righteousness and blind to their internal corruption.

But here’s the flip side: Some people have the opposite bias. They believe they’re worse than they are. They’re so focused on their failures that they can’t see their growth. They’re so ashamed of their past that they can’t believe in their redemption. They’re so convinced of their unworthiness that they can’t receive grace.

This is also a deception. This is also a bias. And it’s just as destructive.

Jesus fought against this too. He told the woman caught in adultery: “Neither do I condemn you. Go now and leave your life of sin.” (John 8:11) He wasn’t denying her sin. He was refusing to let her bias (“I’m worthless”) become her identity.

Deception #3: You Can See Clearly (When You Actually Can’t)

This is the Dunning-Kruger effect combined with the illusion of transparency—the belief that you understand other people’s inner lives better than you do, and the belief that your own perspective is objective truth.

This is perhaps the most dangerous deception because it prevents you from seeking help. If you’re convinced you see clearly, why would you ask for another perspective? If you’re convinced you understand someone, why would you listen to their actual experience?

Jesus encountered this in the rich young ruler: “When Jesus heard this, he said to him, ‘You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.'” (Luke 18:22)

The rich young ruler believed he saw clearly. He believed he understood what it took to be righteous. He believed he was following God. But Jesus saw something he couldn’t see about himself—that his wealth had become his god. That his security was built on money, not faith. That he wasn’t actually willing to follow Jesus if it meant losing his comfort.

The rich young ruler was biased. He was convinced he saw clearly. And that conviction prevented him from seeing the truth.

How to Fight Back (The Practical Spiritual Warfare)

Okay, so we’re all biased. We’re all deceived in various ways. We’re all trapped in perceptual prisons we can’t even see. So what do we actually do about it?

Here’s the thing: You can’t think your way out of a thinking problem. You can’t use your biased brain to overcome your biased brain. It’s like asking your eyes to see their own blind spot.

But there are practices that actually work:

Practice 1: Seek Disconfirmation (Not Just Confirmation)

Don’t just look for evidence that supports your view. Actively search for the strongest argument against your position.

Jesus modeled this by constantly challenging people’s assumptions. He’d ask questions that forced people to examine their biases. He’d tell stories that contradicted their expectations. He’d interact with people from different groups and expose the falsehoods they believed about those groups.

When the Canaanite woman came to Him asking for healing, Jesus used her encounter to teach His disciples something crucial: “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.” (Matthew 15:26) By stating what His disciples believed, He gave her the opportunity to challenge that false assumption.

And she did: “Yes it is, Lord,” she said. “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.” (Matthew 15:27)

Her response revealed the bias in His disciples’ thinking. And Jesus responded: “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” (Matthew 15:28)

Notice what happened: Jesus used this encounter to show His disciples their own blind spots. He exposed their bias—not to shame them, but to free them from it. He showed them that their assumptions about who deserved God’s grace were wrong.

Your practice: This week, find one belief you’re strongly attached to. Then actively search for the best argument against it. Not to be convinced, but to understand. If you can’t articulate the other side’s strongest case, you don’t actually understand the issue. You’re just defending a bias.

Practice 2: Build in External Accountability

You can’t see your own blind spots. That’s what makes them blind.

But other people can. And if they love you, they’ll tell you.

This is why the Church isn’t just you and Jesus. This is why we need community, spiritual direction, mentors, trusted friends who will tell us the truth.

St. Ignatius of Loyola understood this profoundly. He created the practice of spiritual direction—regular meetings with a wise person who could help you see your blind spots. Not someone who judges you, but someone who loves you enough to tell you what you can’t see.

Ignatius understood that deception is strongest when you’re alone with it. But when you bring it into the light—when you speak it out loud to another person—something shifts. The deception loses power.

Your practice: Find someone you trust—a spiritual director, a mentor, a close friend. Tell them: “I want you to tell me what you see in me that I might not see in myself. Where do you think I’m blind? What patterns do you notice? Where do you think I’m deceived?”

Then listen. Don’t defend. Don’t explain. Just listen. Your brain will want to argue. Your ego will want to protect itself. But if you can sit with what they’re saying—really sit with it—you’ll start to see things you couldn’t see before.

Practice 3: Examine Your Motivations (Not Just Your Actions)

It’s easy to look at what you did and judge whether it was right or wrong. It’s much harder to look at why you did it.

But that’s where the real deception lives. That’s where you can do the right thing for the wrong reason and convince yourself you’re righteous.

Jesus was obsessed with this. He constantly asked people to examine their motivations. “Why are you fasting?” “Why are you giving?” “Why are you praying?” “Why are you judging?”

Because you can do all the right things and still be serving the wrong master. You can be disciplined and be serving pride. You can be generous and be serving vanity. You can be righteous and be serving yourself.

This is where motivated reasoning becomes really dangerous. Your brain will rationalize anything if it protects your self-image.

“I’m not being controlling, I’m being responsible.” “I’m not being judgmental, I’m being discerning.” “I’m not being selfish, I’m being practical.” “I’m not being cruel, I’m being honest.”

Your brain is incredibly creative at reinterpreting your own actions in a favorable light.

So you have to get brutal about examining your motivations. Not to shame yourself, but to see clearly.

Your practice: Pick one action you’re proud of. Something you did that you think was good. Now ask yourself: What was I really seeking? Was I seeking to help this person, or was I seeking to feel like a good person? Was I seeking to serve, or was I seeking recognition? Was I seeking to build them up, or was I seeking to prove I’m better than them?

Dig deep. Your brain will resist. But keep asking until you find the truth.

Practice 4: Regularly Update Your Beliefs

This is the hardest one. Because updating your beliefs means admitting you were wrong. And admitting you were wrong is terrifying.

But Jesus calls us to continual conversion—to ongoing transformation and renewal of our minds.

“When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me.” (1 Corinthians 13:11)

Paul is describing spiritual growth as the process of continually updating your understanding. You grow by recognizing that what you believed before was incomplete or wrong.

But here’s the fear: If you update your beliefs, what if you’re wrong again? What if you change your mind and later realize you were wrong about the change?

Welcome to being human. Welcome to the human condition.

The alternative is staying stuck in a bias forever. And that’s worse.

Your practice: What belief have you held for a long time that you’re starting to question? What assumption about God, about yourself, about others, about the world—is starting to feel incomplete or wrong?

Instead of defending it, explore it. Read perspectives you disagree with. Talk to people who see it differently. Let yourself be changed by new information.

This is terrifying. Your brain will resist. But this is how you escape deception. This is how you move from being biased to being wise.

The Ultimate Bias: Thinking You’re Not Biased

Here’s the final trap: The moment you think you’ve figured out your biases and overcome them, you’ve fallen into the biggest bias of all.

The illusion of objectivity. The belief that you now see clearly. The conviction that you’re the one who finally gets it.

This is where spiritual pride lives. This is where the most dangerous deceptions hide.

Jesus warned against this: “To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everybody else, Jesus told this parable…” (Luke 18:9)

The Pharisees were confident. They were certain. They were convinced they understood God’s law perfectly.

And they were completely blind to the Truth standing right in front of them.

So here’s the truth: You’re biased. I’m biased. We’re all biased. And the moment we stop admitting it, we become most dangerous.

Humility isn’t weakness. Humility is clarity. Humility is saying, “I could be wrong about this. I’m probably blind to something. I need help seeing. I need Jesus to show me what I cannot see.”

And that’s the only position from which real wisdom can grow.

The Final Invitation

Jesus said: “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31-32)

Notice what He said: The truth—not your thinking, not your reasoning, not your perspective—the truth will set you free. And He is the Truth.

So the antidote to your biases isn’t better thinking. It’s not perfect logic. It’s not flawless reasoning. It’s Him. It’s staying connected to the One who sees perfectly, who knows completely, who cannot be deceived.

That’s the invitation. Not to figure it all out on your own. But to hold to His teaching. To stay in relationship with Him. To keep seeking Him. To keep listening to Him. To keep allowing Him to challenge your assumptions and transform your vision.

Because the moment you stop being certain about your own clarity, the moment you start being curious about what you might be missing, the moment you start admitting you might be blind—that’s when Jesus can actually reach you.

And that’s when you become free.

May God bless you with the humility to see your blindness, and the grace to seek His truth in all things.

COGNITIVE BIASES

A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO RECOGNIZING YOUR BLIND SPOTS

Your brain uses mental shortcuts to process a complex world quickly. But these shortcuts create predictable errors in judgment. The good news? Once you can name them, you can catch them. This guide breaks down 24 common cognitive biases, explains how they distort your thinking, and gives you practical strategies to overcome them. You can’t eliminate bias. But you can become aware of it—and that awareness changes everything.

ACTION ITEMS

5 THINGS YOU CAN START DOING NOW

1. Identify Your Strongest Belief—Then Attack It

Pick one thing you’re absolutely certain about. Now spend 15 minutes finding the best argument against your position. Not to be convinced, but to understand. If you can’t articulate why someone disagrees with you, you’re just defending a bias.

2. Find Your Mirror: Get Honest Feedback

Reach out to someone you trust—a mentor, spiritual director, or close friend. Tell them: “I want you to tell me what you see in me that I might not see in myself. Where am I blind?” Then listen without defending. Your brain will resist. Listen anyway.

3. Audit Your “Good” Actions

Think of something you’re proud of. Now get brutal: What were you really seeking? Recognition? Control? To feel superior? Dig until you find the true motivation beneath the righteous one. This is where real self-awareness begins.

4. Consume Perspective You Disagree With

Read a book, watch a video, or listen to a podcast from someone whose worldview challenges yours. Not to be converted, but to understand how intelligent people see things differently. Your bias thrives in echo chambers.

5. Practice Sacred Doubt

Identify one long-held belief that’s starting to feel incomplete. Instead of defending it, explore it. Ask God to show you what you’re missing. Update your understanding. Admit you might have been wrong. This is how you move from biased to wise.
